All these schools accept children with foreign passports only, not local Chinese unless they have a foreign passport. Plenty of European kids. Obviously more Brits at British school and Amercians at American schools but not limited to one nationality. Typically half the kids will be from western heritage. Really best to call them to discuss curriculums with them as they are all quite different. You need to find the best program that suits your child.

Thanks. She's researched schools and is hoping to get some inside info before deciding on the school. she is wondering about if children are happy at the schools, what amount of homework to expect and she's looking for one where her son will fit in. We live in HK now and at some international schools (depends on the school), 60-95% of the children have local roots (first language is Cantonese) so some feel it is harder for westerners to fit in. . Is it the same in any of those schools in Shanghai?
In other words, are the majority of children locally based, and have Mandarin as their first language? if so, does the culture of the school might tend to be more eastern than western?
Do children follow the IB program and get to learn at their own rate? Thanks so much.

Livingstone is an international school theoreticaly but in reality is is not. The student body consist of almost 100% Korean students and all are ESL students. English is the medium for instruction but an average English native speaker will undoubtfully fall behind due to the enormous demand of peers whose English is not their first language. Beware!

Typically Yew Chung has mostly Chinese heritage children with many from South East Asia such as Singapore and Malaysia. At a glance, it looks like a local Chinese school. They use British curriculum with MYP (IB) and IBDploma using a bilingual system - Chinese and English. Check out their website. Homework is typical Asian style - lots of hours.
Of the three schools you are asking about, British Int School is the most international as the students are represented by a huge variety of countries around the world. They run the British curriculum with good emphasis on Mandarin. IB Diploma is offered at Year 13 level. Homework is moderate, not too much and lots of well rounded emphasis on extra curricular activities and sports events.
