Need a Shanghai fitness centre recommendation
Posted by almondlynn (224 days ago)
Hello!
I just got to Shanghai and really need advice on getting a good gym.
I work at the Grand Gateway (Hong Qiao Rd) and live on Zhen Ning Rd so I am hoping to get a gym that is on the way back from work and will definitely consider taking a small detour if necessary.
I used to go to PURE in HK and guess I've been spoilt by the standards there. I'm basically looking for a gym with classes (Pilates, Yoga, Body Combat etc), with cardio equipment and of course, it's gotta be clean!
Do let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks!
p/s - need to find a gym before my clothes don't fit anymore :)

Hey Shannon,
Thanks for your reply!
I haven't found a gym yet (infuriating!).
I was seriously considering Alexander's which looks good and feels as good as PURE HK, but thought that paying 10k for a 1 year membership was excessive (it's even more expensive than PURE and we used to get international standard instructors!).
Let me know if you find a gym!
xoxo

Do any of these gyms offer fitness classes in english? If anybody knows of anywhere I can take some fitness classes in english I would love to hear about it!

Gyms are relativley exspensive in Shanghai. 4k is not unusual for anything above the BASIC level. Alexander is priced to be exclusive, but I have seen 4k for gym + 4k for pool at some clubs and no combined discounts. Also family memership is often exactly double price and only permits two adults.
I have even heard of one expat who was asked for more money because he used the facilities so often.
Customer focus is not strong in Shanghai
I have one female Chinese friend who swears by Ambassy.

I go to Wills in Gu bei area. I paid 1500rmb per year and it has pool access too. The trick is to pay directly in the accountant department, NOT by those agents. They pocket anything over 1500rmb.

Hi. I am looking for a personal trainer who speaks Chinese so I can also practise my language skills. Any recommendation is appreciated. Thanks!

I am going to Clarck Hatch Sport Club at Zhenning Road No.55. It has gym with classes(fitball, yoga, dance...) and has nice swimming pool, squash, snooker, tennis court.
