The only way to earn money would be to freelance. Shanghai is full of studios, all staffed by locals. Barriers to entry are low, so prices are also low.

However the wedding photo market is lucrative, and from what I can gather the perception in the market is that overseas photographers are the best. This is why the Japanese and Taiwanese companies are thriving.

If you are not familiar with Chinese wedding photography you will be suprised. Photographs are done on location, as well as in the studio. They are in full wedding dress (before the day) and in costume. Sorry if you already know this.

Shanghai is a place where same jobs can pay very differently. Maybe a better question would be "what is a decent salary in Shanghai"?

It depends of your expenses, so you may want to come for a short trip before making the final decision. I personally don't recommend any job paying under $20k (net) per month (that would be an absolute minimum), but I guess people have the right to dig holes for themselves :).
