securing items
Posted by sammyflorez (189 days ago)
I have a question, any suggestions will really be appreciated.
Once I move to Shanghai and rent a room from someone, how do I keep my items secure? I’m thinking about my passport, important documents and my laptop.

My advice might not be so helpful but from experinece. unless you rent an apartment to stay alone (as I did in the past!) then you can keep your things with you wherevr you go OR in someone else place if you know them well, at least until you get used to the place and the people with you. A friend of mine used to keep her passport and other things in my safe and I asked her to change its code (I had two) and keep it for her use. also I heard (now don't get scared!) about incidents of burgling and they happened for poeple who stayed far from the city centre.

thanks. you can get a decent safe there? but with a safe, someone could just walk off with it, right?
i plan on living near the city center i think, still figuring that part out

Unless you would have a built-in safe (like the ones I had!) then it won't be easy to walk away carrying it. I'm not sure about the bank one. Maybe you can check out for them.

Safes vary. The small ones can be carried off, but unless the thief knows what is in it it isn't worth taking. Also anybody carrying a safe down the stairs will be challenged by the security guards.
Some safes are light, others are big and heavy. But none are expensive. They start at about 30 dollars.
I paid 150 bucks, and it is small, fire proof and weighs in at about 80 lbs. Too cumbersome to carry easily.
