English conversation for elderly group

I'm fortunate enough to have stumbled across a group of elderly Chinese (the oldest is 87!) who meet twice a month to chat in English. Many are quite advanced in English and lead/have led fascinating lives. Lily, who is 87, has just returned from a ten day tour of OZ and NZ! I know they'd love to meet other westerners as they never get a chance to. If you'd like to volunteer a few hours every month to meet and chat with these wonderful women and men, please call me in the evenings on 6327 5642.

Sadly, I have had zero response. I guess meeting elderly folk doesn't hold much interest for most expats.

I really find their lives and stories to be amazing and inspiring and it's so nice to be able to help them converse in English. They are a forgotten generation.......quite sad indeed.

I know they'd be thrilled to meet another westerner......they must be getting sick of my mug by now!

Hi Susan & J. How great to from you both! We usually meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday for 2 hours at a lane house in Yu Yuan Rd. (near Wan Hang Du Rd) in Jing An. This Friday they are having a play in the afternoon at 1.30pm and would love any Westerners to come along. If you'd like to meet with them, please call me on 5273 0703 during daytime & evenings until 8pm.

I arrived in SH recently to seek opps and have an TEFL diploma although I'm not really seeking teaching positions but rather one-on-one tutoring on business english, for starters. I would like to come to your meetings some time but am still settling in. As well, I am in the north part of the city so it could be a long commute. I wanted to let you know that you have a great thing going and do please keep me posted.

H Shanghaimom. So nice to see more interest. Great! You're most welcome to join us. I hope these classes will go on indefinately. They only meet twice a month for 3 hours so it's not a big commitment. Please get in touch when you get back from holidays and have a great summer break!

Hi Adrienne,

i'm an American chinese, living in N. Carolina for 17 years and now self employed in Shanghai. i think what you're doing is terrific! i'm not qualified to be a teacher. but i can be a conversation partner. i don't know if i'm too young for the group, though. i'm 58 years old. another concern is that i live in Puding which is quite distance from where the meetings are held, isn't it?

I used to be a volunteer for a nursing home and all I did was to chat with these elderly folks which was a very special experience in my life.

Hi Qmelon and Lloyd. Thanks so much for your interest. Yu Yuan Rd is the continuation of Beijing Rd. It's one block up and one block west of Jing An Temple. We meet twice a month on the 2nd & 3rd Thursday from 1.30 to 3.30pm. Please call me on 13122 810 421 so we can chat further about it.
