Language Study
Posted by mjolly (948 days ago)
Hi, I'm looking to move to Shanghai as of January of next year. Upon arriving in Shanghai, I plan on studying Mandarin for 6 months so I get my bearings in this new environment.
Therefore, I was wondering if any of you could recommend a particular Mandarin school in Shanghai? I am not so worried about price, so long as the instruction is of a high quality. Also, do you know if these schools allow you to get a visa that is valid for 6 months or longer?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Marc

Hey tigerbay. What were the problem's with Tongji University JBC centre. It always good to get feedback about courses.....good and bad! Fudan University has the longest running course nad I think they've got their act together. Lots of good reports from there.

Hi Adrienne
The administration was a total mess.
You had to do x chapters perday, even if the class was not keeping up. It was how the teachers were performanced managed.
They were doing the Beijing course, and did not have all the materials. We found the listening and dictation impossible. I was certain that it should not be that difficult. I suggested that there was perhaps more resources. I was told no.
I went to SBT and there was audio, and listineing books and audio to accompany exercises and a lot more. Basically they were only delivering 1/3 of the teaching required for the tests they were trying to give us.
This was 2005, but I doubt it has changed.
