You can find money changers outside the branches of Bank of China that are near hotels, ie; the Bund, Nanjing Rd Branch (down from Park Hotel), Hua Hai Rd Branch at Hong Kong Plaza or the Hong Qiao Branch in Xian Xia Rd. They are found at the Friendship stores. They're usally milling around the front and carry backpakcs or pouches. They'll go inside the bank to get the foreign money exchanged so don't be too shocked! They also have business cards so you may want to take one for future use!

The official (bank rate) is almost exactly 8RMB per USD. What do you get from these money changers? Anyone have experience with counterfeits? Sleight-of -hand experts who shortchange you? A common experience in the Philippines and other countries.

today i went inside the industrial bank of china on huai hai road near Parkson building. Inside the bank there were two agents sitting near the counter where foreign currency is exchanged.Bank offered me 7.83 per uSD whereas this guy gave me 7.91 and that too in frnt of bank guys. Later I checked if he has given me any fake currency but it was all real notes......... really surprised how it operates in this country..... agents giving counterbids inside the bank...... good for us.......cheers!

I agree as what "simple guy" said above. The guy inside the Industrial Bank of China in Huahai Road is very good & reliable. They always give good exchange rates. I was already having transactions with them 3 years ago already and so far....got no problem at all. The USD he gave me in the past were all real notes!!!
