Posted by Georgielily (853 days ago)
Which is best for renting houses?
Have budget of 5000USD/month and need to access British schools & city centre?
Comments please on housing quality, the neighbourhood and access to schools & city centre.
Many thanks

We had a similar budget and were looking for somewhere near the Jinqiao area for shopping convenience, near Dulwich College but we also wanted a house with garden for the kids. The relocation agent wasn't able to find anything suitable (although this was in June so perhaps there would be more now with more expats returning home). The compounds around Jinqiao were either out of the price bracket, old or aparrments. The villa we ended up getting is 30mins from school but we all loved it- it's new, FABULOUS clubhse facilities and great garden. Carrefour & Walmart are 20mins away, so it's all a compromise.Good luck with yr hsehunting.

With a budget of 5000 USD/month you could probably rent a garden house in Puxi.
Jinqiao is in Pudong and there are a few villas for rent. Try Green Villas development or Thomsons Golf villas.
In Puxi Hongqiao is also very popular with expats and there are a lot of houses and villas with small gardens.
Both are a long way from the city centre, but have all the facilities for daily living.

The key is where you are going to work and which school you want.
Shanghai is quite big and you can end up with 90 minutes commute if you work in Puxi and leave in Pudong or vice versa.
I leave and work in Jinqiao Pudong and love it. Very convenient for shopping, restaurant, gym, schools but more for families than for single people.
it is still close enough to Puxi for week ends when traffic is easier.
