Required certificates for extension of Visa
Posted by Panpanjungle (852 days ago)
According to the official website of the Shanghai municipalty (www.shangha.gov.com) expats need to bring the following documents if they want to extend their L visa.
1. A valid passport and visa;
2. Certificate for accommodation registration;
3. Certificate of kinship;
4. Certificate of hospital's diagnosis;
5. Certificate of financial sponsorship.
My questions are:
A.Do I need to go to a ‘special’ hospital for expats to get the certificate of hospital’s diagnosis? Which is from my understanding a health certificate but correct me if I’m wrong.
B.Where is the hospital located?
C.How much is going to take me down in RMB?
D.What’s the time frame for the final result?
E.What does the gov. mean with cert. of financial sponsorship?
Many thanks beforehand,
PJ

only 1 and 2 are required to extend your L visa. But this is discretionary.
You will also need photos.
The certificate of diagnosis is requred if you apply for a 'Z' visa or as it is now the resisdence permit.
You get this from a special 'hospital' in the Hongqiao area. It will cost you RMB 700+.
Get soemone to take you to the visa office in Pudong. YingChen road and MingSheng Rd. Near the science museum.
You can do it all over the counter. A one year extension, if they will give you that, is about 1000rmb.
HOwever they have tightened the regs and you may have to leave the country and re-enter. Visa on entry is common.
Finally, make sure you have the Ceritificate of accomadation registration. This is a yellow slip from your local police station.
If you don't have one you can get fined. If you have been here a long time and not registered, then it may be cheaper and easiser to go to Hong Kong for the day.

Thanks Tigerbay. A roundtrip to Hong Kong is 2700RMB incl. tax. I also heard there's such a thing as a 10 days overstay meaning I can stay in China 10 days after the official date of experation without gettin' fined. Can you confirm that? I heard processing the certificate from the hospital takes up to five days?

The 10 days, I have not heard of. If it does exist it would be descretionary. You should expect a fine of about 500rmb, this seems to be standard. Though they are entitled to fine you daily.
The hospital check is not needed for L visa.
