The older Central Residences is in alot quieter more green area called the French Concession area. There are a number of nice restaurants/bars around the area and there is the Radission and Xinguo down the road. The only downside I can see would be shopping. There are a few local supermarkets around but you need to go to Zhong Shan Park to to the Carrefour supermarket or City Shopper at Portman to get more expat styled food. It has a freindly, well- established expat community. The new Central Residences is extremely convenient to everything inclucing the lakeside park at Xin Tian Di. There's City supermarket in Times Square and plenty of Starbucks! The only down side I can see is the renovations noise (which can drive you nuts on weekends) and the slightly empty feeling about it. I don't think it is as full as Central Residences Phase 1. Well, that's my "two bobs worth". I am sure you will enjoy where ever you decide on.
Cheers,
