American moving to Shanghai
Posted by annemarie415 (270 days ago)
I am a 33 year old single female from Minneapolis, MN USA moving to Shanghai. My office is located in HongQiao district. I would like to live in this district as well, as I will be walking to/from the office. Is this a good area to live in? I need nightlife, I am very social, would like to be among other expats. My company is paying up to $15,000RMB per month for my living allowance. It looks like this should get me a very nice place. Any comments or advice is very appreciated.

You are only a short cab ride to the downtown area, from Hongqiao. You have a good choice of restaruants, and international food stores.

hi,there
actually, hongqiao area is the hot area in Shanghai.
There are many restaurants and bars on Hongmei Rd, Shuicheng Rd and Huangjinchengdao Rd. I think you can have many choices and enjoy your life.
In addition, according to your rental budget, you should have a very nice apartment in this area. There are many very good complex, which can provide you modern renovation, furniture, club house.

Yeah sure, you came to China to live in a place full of foreigners and overpriced restaurants...go local boy, 15k can get you very far in Chinese populated places with fun real local restaurants.

The Hong Qiao area is large and incorporates Gubei new district phase one and phase two. Gubei phase one was built from 1992 so most apartments in its central area are older. Gubei phase two has the newer apartments but there's still alot of construction going on so take care on your selection. Make sure you get a well established block like Rich Garden, Gubei International or Hua Li jia Ju. There's another popular block in the north area which is called Yanlord.
